Relax and Unwind: 7 Tips

  • Meditation - Just 10 minutes of daily meditation can reduce stress and anxiety. There are countless guided meditation exercises available online. You can also find them on various music streaming services like Spotify or iTunes.
  • Mindfulness - Try to spend five minutes several times a day being "in the present moment." Mindfulness has been shown to relieve psychological stress, alleviate feelings of sadness, and even help with physical pain. Focus solely on the present—your breath, the space around you, the sounds, and what is happening right now.
  • Breathing Exercises - Breathing exercises are a highly effective way to relax. Deep abdominal breathing works quickly to combat stress, irritation, or anger. Inhale deeply through your nose while visibly expanding your belly, then exhale slowly through your mouth while pulling your belly inwards. Another technique is focusing on exhalation, such as the 7-11 breathing method (inhale for 7 counts, exhale for 11 counts). If that feels too long, try the 3-5 method (inhale for 3 counts, exhale for 5 counts). Choose what feels comfortable, as long as the exhale is longer than the inhale. Always inhale through your nose and exhale through your mouth.
  • Walking - Walking is an easy form of exercise with minimal risk of injury. Fresh air helps relax both the body and the mind. Walking also increases blood flow to the brain, releasing endorphins and other relaxing chemicals. Try brisk walking to amplify the calming effect.
  • Pets - Pet a furry animal, such as a cat, dog, or rabbit, more often. Stroking your pet not only has a calming effect but also lowers heart rate and blood pressure.
  • Stretching Exercises - Stretch different parts of your body to release tension and relax your muscles. Gentle stretches can help your body unwind and feel more at ease.
  • Listen to Music - Listening to your favorite music can immediately relax your mind and body. Nature-inspired music, like the sounds of the sea, rain, or chirping birds in a forest, can also have a deeply calming effect.
